EV CHARGER INSTALLATION IN CALGARY

VA Electric installs Level 2 EV chargers for Calgary homes, detached garages and commercial properties. Each installation is designed around the existing electrical service, panel capacity, charger requirements and available electrical load.

Tesla Wall Connectors, Emporia and other EV chargers can be installed at 32A, 40A or 48A depending on available capacity. Where capacity is limited, EV load management or EVEMS may allow EV charging without a 200A service upgrade.

HOW EV CHARGER INSTALLATION WORKS IN CALGARY

1. EV CHARGER & PANEL ASSESSMENT

VA Electric reviews the electrical service, panel, main breaker, available breaker space, major electrical loads and charger location. Charger specifications and cable routing are assessed to determine the required breaker, conductor size and charging capacity.

2. CALGARY EV LOAD CALCULATION

An electrical load calculation determines whether the existing 100A, 125A, 150A or 200A service can support EV charging. Existing loads including air conditioning, electric ranges, dryers, hot tubs, saunas and legal suites are considered when determining available capacity.

3. EV LOAD MANAGEMENT & EVEMS

When a Calgary home has limited electrical capacity, an EV load management system or Electric Vehicle Energy Management System (EVEMS) may allow EV charging without upgrading the electrical service. The system manages charging based on the electrical capacity available to the home.

4. EV CIRCUIT, PERMIT & INSTALLATION

VA Electric installs the dedicated 240V circuit, breaker, wiring and EV charging equipment for the approved charging capacity. Tesla Wall Connectors, Emporia and other Level 2 EV chargers can be hardwired or connected using an approved 240V receptacle where applicable. VA Electric handles the Calgary electrical permit, testing and inspection.

Calgary EV charger installation frequently asked questions

Yes, many Calgary homes with 100A electrical services can support an EV charger. VA Electric completes an electrical load calculation to determine available capacity and the appropriate charging rate. If capacity is limited, an EV load management system or EVEMS may allow EV charging without upgrading to a 200A service.

Not necessarily. The required service size depends on the home's existing electrical loads and the charging capacity being added. A 100A service may support 32A, 40A or 48A EV charging depending on the load calculation, or load management may be used where permitted instead of a 200A service upgrade.

An Electric Vehicle Energy Management System (EVEMS) controls EV charging based on the electrical capacity available to the property. When electrical demand is high, the system can reduce or interrupt charging to prevent the electrical service from being overloaded.

In some Calgary homes, yes. When the existing electrical service cannot continuously support the additional EV load, an approved EV load management system or EVEMS may provide an alternative to increasing the electrical service capacity. The correct solution depends on the load calculation, existing service and charging requirements.

The circuit size depends on the charger's continuous charging output and manufacturer requirements. For example, Tesla specifies 32A charging on a 40A breaker, 40A charging on a 50A breaker and 48A charging on a 60A breaker for compatible Wall Connector installations. VA Electric sizes the breaker, conductors and charger configuration for the specific installation.

Yes. EV charger installations in Calgary require an electrical permit and are subject to inspection. VA Electric handles the Calgary electrical permit and inspection process as part of the EV charger installation.

Yes, EV chargers can be installed in detached garages when the electrical supply and available capacity are suitable. VA Electric assesses the garage feeder, panel capacity, cable route and EV charging load to determine whether the existing garage electrical system can support the charger or requires additional work.

A hardwired Level 2 EV charger is permanently connected to a dedicated 240V circuit, while a NEMA 14-50 outlet allows compatible portable charging equipment to plug into a 240V receptacle. The appropriate option depends on the charger, desired charging rate, electrical capacity and manufacturer requirements.
